Best Things to Do on Lake Murray

What to Experience on the Water

Lake Murray is one of central South Carolina’s most popular outdoor destinations for a reason. Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or you’ve lived nearby for years, it offers plenty of space to explore and enjoy at your own pace.

If you’re planning time on the lake, here are some of the best things to do while you’re out there.

Where the Real Fun Begins

One of the most popular things to do on Lake Murray is tubing. Especially during the warmer months, you’ll see boats pulling tubes across open water all day long.

Wakeboarding, water skiing, and wake surfing are some of the most popular ways to spend time on the lake, especially when the morning water is smooth and wide open.

If you’re visiting from out of town, this is one of the fastest ways to tap into the energy of Lake Murray. It’s active, a little competitive, and usually, the moment everyone talks about long after the day is over.

Swim and Anchor

When South Carolina temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s, swimming becomes less optional and more necessary. Sandy Beach is a well-known swimming area, but there are also countless quiet coves where you can drop anchor, float, and cool off.

Some of the best lake days aren’t about moving constantly. They’re about staying put, relaxing, and enjoying the water without feeling rushed.

Dock and Dine

Lake Murray has a strong dock-and-dine scene, which makes grabbing lunch part of the experience instead of just a break from it.

Popular waterfront restaurants include:

  • Liberty Tap Room on the Lake (right next to our dock)

  • Rusty Anchor Restaurant

  • Timberlake Country Club

  • Buckaroo’s Grill & Bar

  • The Lake Shack

  • Waterdog Cafe

  • Sand Bar Grille

  • Buffalo Creek Marina & Grill

  • Charlie’s Fisherman's Wharf

Pulling up by boat adds something different to a typical lunch outing and gives you a chance to step off the water before heading back out for the rest of your day.

Go Fishing

Lake Murray is known for its largemouth bass, striped bass, catfish, and sunfish. Whether you’re an experienced angler or just casting a line for fun, fishing remains one of the lake’s most consistent attractions.

Many visitors don’t realize how strong the fishing reputation is here until they see it for themselves.

Visit Bomb Island

Bomb Island is one of Lake Murray’s most recognized landmarks. During the summer months, thousands of purple martins gather there at dusk, creating a unique and memorable sight.

Even outside peak bird season, it’s worth cruising by. The open water surrounding the island offers wide views and a quieter stretch of the lake that feels removed from the busier areas.

Watch the Sunset on the Water

Sunset on Lake Murray is simple but worth staying for. As the heat eases and boat traffic slows, the lake feels calmer again.

For visitors, it’s often the highlight of the trip. For locals, it’s a reminder of why the lake is such a staple in South Carolina.

Take It All In

While you can enjoy parts of Lake Murray from shore, the best way to experience it is by being on the water. Renting a boat gives you access to the swimming areas, restaurants, coves, and landmarks that make the lake special.

However you choose to spend your time, Lake Murray offers the space and flexibility to make it your own kind of lake day.

Pontoon Boat Rental Tips for Lake Murray

Lake season in South Carolina sneaks up on you.

One minute it’s February, and the next thing you know it’s 85 degrees, the lake is full, and everyone is wishing they booked earlier.

If you’re already thinking ahead to warmer weekends on Lake Murray, now is the perfect time to plan. A little preparation makes your first lake day of the season feel easy instead of rushed.

Match the Boat to Your Plans

Start by thinking about what kind of day you want once the weather warms up.

If you’re picturing relaxed cruising, fishing, or bringing your dog along, a Fish & Cruise pontoon is a great fit. It’s simple, comfortable, and perfect for slow afternoons when the water starts warming up in spring.

If tubing, wakeboarding, or pulling skiers is part of your plan, you’ll want a performance or luxury tritoon. The extra tube adds stability and power, which makes a noticeable difference once summer traffic picks up and the lake gets busier.

Lake Murray Fills Up Fast

It might not feel like peak lake weather yet, but it comes quickly.

As soon as temperatures start climbing in March, weekend rentals begin to book up, especially Saturdays and holiday weekends. Morning time slots are usually the first to go once summer arrives. Planning now means you’re not scrambling later.

Prepare for South Carolina Weather

Spring and early summer on Lake Murray are some of the best times to be on the water. Warm, sunny, but not yet peak humidity.

Still, South Carolina weather can shift quickly. Bring layers in early spring, sunscreen once the sun gets stronger, and always check the forecast before heading out.

As we move into summer, expect the heat to build fast by midday. A cooler with water and drinks goes from “nice to have” to necessary.

Water Toys & Fishing

If tubing or wakeboarding is on your list once the water warms up, reserve your water toys in advance.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Only towables rented directly through the marina can be used with rental boats. Guests are not permitted to bring their own towables.

  • Fishing is allowed on designated fishing-friendly pontoons only, and a valid South Carolina fishing license is required.

Plan for Space, Not Just Seats

When booking early in the season, think about who’s coming.

A boat that technically fits nine can feel much smaller once coolers, towels, and bags come aboard. If you’re planning birthdays, graduation outings, or family gatherings once the weather turns warm, sizing up can make the day far more comfortable.

A little extra room goes a long way once everyone settles in.

Don’t Rush the Launch

Even on the first warm weekends of the year, give yourself time to arrive early.

Check-in, safety instructions, and getting comfortable with the boat all take a few minutes. Starting calmly makes the entire day feel better. The goal isn’t just getting on the water; it’s enjoying the process.

Ready for Lake Season?

Warmer weather in South Carolina doesn’t stay away for long. Planning your pontoon rental ahead of time means you’ll be ready the moment lake season kicks off.

At Better Boat Rental, we are gearing up for another season on Lake Murray, and we’re here to help you make the most of it.

Because once the sun comes out, you’ll want to be on the water.
